August 7 - Goodbye to All That

So soon?

Guess so.

Duty calls,

and so on.

So, coffee with John again, more fine conversation,

now back at White Rabbit, and a fond farewell,

across

the

greater

San Gabriel Valley on 10 to

Claremont, for a trip of memories, past the Station,

Sumner

House on the

corner of First and

College,

Wig

Hall,

Bonita

Avenue,

Rembrandt,

Thatcher

Music Building,

the Pomona

Gates,

Smith Memorial Tower,

Honnold Library,

and up Dartmouth to Rancho San Antonio,

with its views of Glendora Ridge, Mt. Baldy,

Ontario and Cucamonga Peaks.

After a brief hide-and-seek with the L.A. Times, past the Theological Seminary (will John be there soon?  thinking of Crystal on the opposite coast),

beeline to

Mongolian Barbeque for a nostalgic lunch,

then charge farther west below the

Front Range,

north of the Verdugos,

in and

out of

La Tuna Canyon

and the

San Fernando

Valley,

up

Weldon

and

down

by

Gavin

Cliffs,

across

Santa

Clarita

for

another refreshment stop at

Castaic.

From

here,

Violin

Canyon,

the

Ridge

Route

east

of

Piru

Gorge

and

Hungry

Valley,

curving

west

along

Gorman

Ridge,

up

and

over

Tejon Pass,

down

by

Lebec

and

the

oaks

near Fort Tejon,

plunging

down

the

declivity

of

the

Grapevine towards

Wheeler Ridge

and the

Tehachapis.

Due to known construction on 5 further north,

elect 99,

vaguely on the Sierra side of the Central Valley,

though still within sight of the

Coast Range.

Fresno[!(!)], Sacramento, and

I-80: it all flies by until home, with Harriet arriving shortly thereafter.
